DTS-ES Extended Surround is a new multi-channel digital signal format developed by Digital Theater Systems Inc. While offering high compatibility with the conventional DTS Digital Surroud format, DTS-ES Extended Surround greatly improves the 360-degree surround impression and space expression thanks to further expanded surround signals. This format has been used professionally in movie theaters since 1999.In addition to the 5.1surround channels (FL, FR, C, SL, SR and LFE), DTS-ES Extended Surround also offers the SB (Surround Back) channel for surround playback with a total of 6.1 channels. DTS-ES Extended Surround includes two signal formats with different surround signal recording methods, as DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 and DTS-ES Matrix 6.1.' DTS', 'DTS-ES Ext ended Surround' and 'Neo: 6' are trademarks of Digital Theater Systems, Inc.Dolby Digital identifies the use of Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio coding for such consumer formats as DVD and DTV.
As with film sound, Dolby Digital can provide up to five full-range channels for left, center, and right screen channels, independent left and right surround channels, and a sixth ( '.1') channel for low-frequency effects.Dolby Surround Pro Logic II is an improved matrix decoding technology that provides better spatiality and directionality on Dolby Surround program material; provides a convincing three-dimensional soundfield on conventional stereo music recordings; and is ideally suited to bring the surround experience t o aut omot ive sound. While convent ional surround programming is fully compatible with Dolby Surround Pro Logic II decoders, soundtracks will be able to be encoded specifically to take full advantage of Pro-Logic I I playback, including separate left and right surround channels. (Such mat erial is also compat ible wit h conventional Pro Logic decoders. )Dolby Digital EX creates six full-bandwidth output channels from 5.1-channel sources. This is done using a matrix decoder that derives three surround channels from the two in the original recording. For best results, Dolby Digital EX should be used with movies soundtracks recorded with Dolby Digital Surround EX.Manufactured under license from Dolby Laboratories. S-VIDEOVIDEOININWhen connecting video components such as DVD players, cable boxes, satellite receivers and televisions, you can use different types of cables depending on how the video component is equipped.Video connections:If the video component is equipped with S-VIDEO jacks, it is recommended that it be connected to the AVR-800 or directly to the television monitor using an S-VIDEO cable. S-Video cables provide better picture clarity and resolution.
If the video component is not equipped with an S-VI DEO j ack, use a convent ional RCA t o RCA composite cable to connect to the AVR-800 or directly to the television. The above illustration shows how to connect video components to the AVR-800.Note:When connection more than one video component to the AVR-800 (ie: VCR and DVD player) it is easier to use either all S-Video cables or all RCA to RCA composite cables. This allows both video signals (DVD and VCR) to be sent through the AVR-800 to the TV monitor using j ust one video input on t he TV (S-Video or RCA). Regardless of the video component being played DVD or VCR, the picture will always appear on the same video input of the monitor. I f you use both S-Video and RCA composite cables to connect different video components to the AVR-800, you must also use both S-Video and RCA composite cables to connect the TV monitor to the AVR-800.For example, if you connect a DVD player to the AVR-800 using S-Video cable and a VCR using an RCA to RCA composite cable, you must also connect the TV to the AVR-800 using both types of cables.
This requires an S- Video cable from the S-Video monitor out jack on the AVR800 to an S-Video input on the TV (ie. In addition, you must use an RCA composite cable from the composite video monit or out j ack on t he AVR-800 t o an RCA composite video input on the TV but not the same input used for the S-Video cable(ie: Video 2). Using this type of dual cable video connection. You will need to switch the TV video input source from TV to Video 1 to Video 2 depending on the video source being played-TV, DVD or VCR.Audio connections:Some video components are equipped with special digital audio outputs (ie: DVD players).
I f your video component is equipped with a digital audio output, it is recommended that you connect to the AVR-800 using a digital cable. Digital audio cables are required to use the DTS and Dolby Digital surround sound modes. If you do not use digital connections, the AVR-800 will only operate in Dolby Pro LogicII, Dolby 3 Stereo, Hall, Theater and Stadium surround modes. There are two types of digital cables - coaxial (75 ohm) and optical.
The AVR-800 i s equipped with both types of digital inputs. These inputs are labeled DIGITAL/DTS/PCM on the rear of the unit. Connect the video component outputs to any one of the three digital inputs on theAVR-800.If the video component is not equipped with a digital output, use a dual RCA to RCA composite audio cable to connect to the AVR-800.Make sure to connect:White plug to white jack ( L: left )Red plug to red jack ( R: right )Note:When an optical cable is used, remove the protection caps from t he component and AVR-800 before attempting to insert the optical cable. If not using an optical cable or if the cable is removed, always re-install t he protection caps t o prevent dirt and dust from entering the inputs. If using a coaxial digital cable, leave the protection caps in both the video component and AVR-800. ConnectionDIGITAL IN/OUT terminalsI f the CD player or tape player has digital outputs, connect the component with coaxial cables or optical cables.DIGITAL IN to DIGITAL OUT(CD, etc.)DIGITAL OUT to DIGITAL IN( MD, etc.).

The Yamaha NSP-220 (around £140 from QED), alongside the Yammy 420 got best all in one package up to £500 in this year`s What Hi Fi awards - again a sub/satellite system. Not heard it, but might be worth a look - I know you`re going for the Denon as amp (where are you getting it - I`ve seen it at hifijunkies for £270). I believe the Eltax package is a slightly older version than that sold by Richer, hence the decreased price. I`m sure there are a couple of people around here who have this, though, and will be able to fill you in better than I.This item was edited on Saturday, 3rd November 2001, 08:04. Went for the Stagate X.1`s from QED. Excellent service from the supplier although when I opened the box the sub power cord was the 2 pin type. Telephoned Eltax who shipped a uk 3-pin which arrived the next day.
1 problem with the package is all the speaker cables are the same length (5M) which is nowhere near long enough to go around te edges of my room for the rears. I had to buy extracable & ended up upgrading slightly to te tune of £45! A well money well spent I suppose. First impressions are very good with good sound & plenty of bass (tried R2 Shrek & R1 Independance day). I have just bought the Denon 1602 (Hifi Junkies) to accompany them & can`t believe the quality of sound.

If naybody else has this set u or anything similar any advice or tips would be most welcome. Stiggy, The 1602 is a superb product from the entry level stable, and for its modest spec can pump some serious noise from its slim guts. Denon amps have a nice warm balance to the sound which can be made to have more bite by adding speakers which are very aggresive in terms of overall balance-the Eltax fit the bill perfectly(though i`ve never been a fan of Eltax, i say if the cap fits, wear it!), so placement is a must.
Ensure the sub woofer level is set correctly for the sound modes. Dolby and dts. On the remote or amps facsia you`ll see a button marked `input mode`, press this until it says dts in the display. Now press the system set up button and scroll until you get to the sub woofer level, set this to around +5-+6db and press the system set up button again to save the changes.
What you`ll get now is two different settings for Dolby and dts soundtracks. Just remember that when you watch dts movies to set the amp to its `exclusive` dts mode by pressing the input button until dts is shown in the display.
Eltax Stargate Manual Online
Not only does this mean you can get the advantage of the deeper bass that is contained on dts soundtracks, but you`ll be rewarded with a subtly sweeter sound than you would judt using the `auto` mode, which detects what type of signal is going through the circuit. Bear in mind that if you`re using the dts mode, sound that is encoded in dolby or pcm format won`t be played! I usually just turn up the volume on the tv to hear the dvd menu! Also ensure the speakers are placed correctly for when you use Dolby Pro Logic 2 processing. Place the speakers on the side walls, not directly behind the seating position. Now that the pro logic or stereo tracks have a new lease of rear speaker life, its important that the sound is fired across the listening position and not back towards the front of the room. Firing across the room with the speakers around six feet up the wall will ensure the sound `spreads` over a wide listening arc, whereas behind the sound would be too directional and distracting.
I`ve sworn by this placement method for years, and with the added stero rear benefit of DPL2,the resulting sound is sensational! With the sub. Place it alongside one of the speakers firing at an angle towards the listening position. You won`t be able to tell where its coming from, but putting it between teh main speakers can cause a bit of boom as the sub has no room to breath. And positioning it alongside the speakers close to a wall ensures that the adjoining wall means the bass is sublty lifted by the sound rebounding off the wall. Just make sure that you tune the sub properly, by turning it right down and then playing a cd or action scene from the dvd, then raising the volume on the sub until the sub becomes part of the overall sound, not the centre of attention! I`ll be posting an article soon at Clayts` excellent Area 450 site about how to set up and get the best from your home cinema set up.
