Gadi, when looking into tickets I would follow these priorities (not in order of your importance maybe): price, schedule (timing and stop-overs), airports, visa requirements.And only then I would start thinking about collecting miles. You are travelling for a reason. And this reason is most likely not getting miles.
Don't let yourself fool with loyalty programs.Again, if you fly frequently the FF program can impact your decision. But it should not be the overriding criteria.Take me as an example. Being based in Dubai by default I will tend to fly with Emirates or Etihad. Distance to both airports (DXB and AUH) is about the same.
Now, if the price and schedule of both Emirates and Etihad are about the same, I will go with Emirates because of my FF programme. But I would not fly with Emirates if I could get the same ticket at a lower price from Etihad.
Qatar is a great, but for me in Dubai it means connecting in Doha. And as I prefer direct, Qatar must be exceptionally value for money in order for me not to fly direct. Gadi, I was in a similar search recently as I had an upcoming SkyTeam.
I went through each of the SkyTeam members. I am not a frequent flyer and I thought I might enroll into a program which may get me some extra benefits as a starter. After finding nothing useful, I finally gave MEA a look and I could not believe my eyes - they were offering an immediate credit of 7000 miles, just to enroll. I did so but suspected it could not be as good as it looks. I checked the redemption page and found the answer. Unless I was ready to redeem on MEA - something unlikely to happen as I live in East Asia - it would take ages for me to build sufficient mileage for redemption on a partner. So, the next thing I will do is check which SkyTeam offers attainable redemption options.
